How is the procedure performed?

INTRAVENOUS PYELOGRAM

Patient is positioned on the x-ray table and some control x-ray images of the abdomen and kidneys are taken. A contrast agent is injected intravenously. After which a series of x-rays will be taken of the urinary system. The abdomen is slightly compressed to keep the contrast in the kidneys while images are taken. It will be released once the kidneys are visualised and contrast is tracked down the ureters and into the bladder.

Is the examination painful?

The x-ray examination is not painful although the compression could be uncomfortable. As in photograph taking, any movement during exposure will render the image unclear. Thus patient may be asked to stop breathing and moving for the duration of the exposure which is a few seconds.

As contrast material is introduced by way of an injection, the patient may feel a sting from the needle prick. Some people report a flushing feeling during the contrast agent injection but this will disappear within a minute or two. There is no cause for alarm.
