Barium Enema

As the developing embryo is much more sensitive to x-radiation exposure, patients must inform the radiographer or physician, prior to any x-ray examination if there is any possibility of pregnancy.
The patient should keep to a low residue diet for two days before the examination, e.g., beancurd, noodles, soup, porridge or fish. No solids, vegetables, fruits, or meat should be taken. On the day before the examination, the patient should drink plenty of water. A successful examination requires an empty colon. The following laxatives should be taken the night before the examination:

At 7pm, the patient should dissolve Magnesium Sulphate in a glass of water and drink the mixture. |

At 8pm, the patient should take three Dulcolax tablets with a glass of water. |

The patient should have nothing to eat after 10pm the night before the examination, but should have drinks like glucose, honey or plain water. |
At 7am on the day of the examination, one Dulcolax Suppository should be inserted into the rectum. It should be retained for 15 minutes before evacuation. No food should be taken before the examination, but glucose, honey or plain water are allowed.
Magnesium Sulphate, Dulcolax tablet and Dulcolax Suppository are available for collection at the clinic, if necessary. |
