CT COLONOGRAPHY SCREENING

WHAT IS CT COLONOGRAPHY SCREENING?

It is a technique that uses a CT scanner and computer virtual reality software to look inside the body. It is able to visualise the large bowel (colon) to detect polyps and cancers. It does not require a scope nor is there a need to fill the colon with barium.

Compared with Barium Enema or conventional colonoscopy, it is more comfortable and is pain-free.

WHY SCREEN FOR COLORECTAL CANCER?

Colorectal cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in Singaporean males as well as females, and the incidence is increasing as a result of sedentary lifestyles, obesity and a diet high in fats and low in fruits and vegetables.

If detected early, survival rates may be raised to as high as 90%.

WHO SHOULD GO FOR CT COLONOGRAPHY SCREENING?

  1. Men and women aged 50 and above.
  2. Younger individuals with these risk factors:
    Family history of colon cancer
Personal history of inflammatory bowel disease

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Data is obtained using a CT scanner, after which the data is reconstructed by the computer to see inside the bowel. The procedure takes less than 20 minutes. However, bowel preparation is necessary in order to obtain a clear view.

WHAT HAPPENS TO ME AFTER THE EXAMINATION?

You may resume normal activities after the examination. Your results will be sent to your doctor who will go through them in detail with you.

ADVANTAGES OF CT COLONOSCOPY OVER TRADITIONAL COLONOSCOPY

CT colonography visualises 100% of the interior and exterior, compared to traditional colonoscopy which only visualises 80% of the interior colon.
Traditional colonoscopy requires the insertion of a 5 feet long tube/scope into the rectum, with the possible risk of colon perforation whereas CT colonography only requires the insertion of a small catheter for the introduction of gas to inflate the colon.
Traditional colonoscopy requires the administration of sedation, usually because of the resulting pain and discomfort, whereas CT colonography does not require sedation.
