LOW DOSE CT LUNG SCREEN

WHAT IS LOW DOSE CT LUNG SCREENING?

It is a CT of the lung using a low dose technique intended for asymptomatic persons. The dosage used is 6 times less than conventional chest CT.

It supplements routine chest x-days in patients without symptoms, and is able to detect lung cancers in their earlier stage, unlike routine chest x-ray screening, which is often unable to detect lung cancers until they are in the advanced stage.

Low dose CT lung screening also improves the likelihood of detecting non-calcified nodules, some of these which can be cancerous.

It should however be noted that this screening is not designed for abnomalities of the heart, aorta, lymph nodes or bones.

WHY SCREEN FOR LUNG CANCER?

Lung cancer is the most prevalent cancer in Singaporean males and is the third most common cancer in females (Singapore cancer registry, report no. 4).

As it is usually discovered too late, the 5-year survival rate is only 14%. Early detection of the disease may raise this survival rate to as high as 70% to 80%.

WHO SHOULD GO FOR CT LUNG SCREENING?

Patients with increased risk of developing lung cancer, i.e. those aged 50 to 80 years with a 10 pack-year history.
Current or former pipe and cigar smokers.
Those with family history of lung cancer.
Those with increased exposure to asbestos, radon and nickel.
And those who are exposed frequently to gasoline and diesel exhaust.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The procedure is done on a CT scanner. It is non-claustrophobic, non-invasive and painless. No injections are required and the whole procedure takes 15 minutes.

WHAT HAPPENS TO ME AFTER THE EXAMINATION?

You may resume normal activities after the examination. Your results will be sent to your doctor who will go through them in detail with you.
