Locations where Fluoroscopy is Available

As with diagnostic general radiography, fluoroscopy uses x-radiation to capture a moving image of an organ while it is functioning. This is useful to study the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract including the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and the rectum.

Fluoroscopy is often also used in interventional procedures where it is imperative to have real-time images.

The tissues of the GI tract are similar in density, so a contrast agent is used to help produce clearer images. Barium, a dense metallic chemical, is introduced into the GI tract either through ingestion or through a rectal tube. The barium coats the inside of the organ and produces a sharp, well-defined image.

The patient should keep to a low residue diet for two days before the examination, e.g., beancurd, noodles, soup, porridge or fish. No solids, vegetables, fruits, or meat should be taken. On the day before the examination, the patient should drink plenty of water. A successful examination requires an empty colon. The following laxatives should be taken the night before the examination:

2. At 8pm, the patient should take three Dulcolax tablets with a glass of water.
3. The patient should have nothing to eat after 10pm the night before the examination, but should have drinks like glucose, honey or plain water.

At 7am on the day of the examination, one Dulcolax Suppository should be inserted into the rectum. It should be retained for 15 minutes before evacuation. No food should be taken before the examination, but glucose, honey or plain water are allowed.

Hysterosalpingogram

Please bring along all of your previous x-rays for comparison.

Appointments are necessary. Please call the location where service is available directly.

As the developing embryo is much more sensitive to x-radiation exposure, patients must inform the radiographer or physician, prior to any x-ray examination if there is any possibility of pregnancy.

The patient should abstain from intercourse between the last menstrual period and the time of the examination. The examination needs to be done between the 8th and 10th days in a patient with a regular 28-day cycle.

Micturating Cystourethrogram

Please bring along all of your previous x-rays for comparison.

Appointments are necessary. Please call the location where service is available directly.

As the developing embryo is much more sensitive to x-radiation exposure, patients must inform the radiographer or physician, prior to any x-ray examination if there is any possibility of pregnancy.

No special preparation is necessary for adult patients.
